Top Ten Online Backup Services

September 30th, 2009

There is no dearth of online backup services available in the market. Which among these services are the better ones? While some services provide reliability of the data, other provide cheaper service. Some services provide unique features which can be very helpful in certain cases. Given below there are ten popular online backup servces with their features:

  1. Mozy Beta (http://mozy.com): The beta online backup service provided by Mozy is unique because it provides 2 GB of free data storage. Regular plans begin at $4.95 per month for 30 GB of storage.

  2. XDrive (http://www.xdrive.com): X drive sports a very refined user interface. It supports scheduled backups, and you can manage your online data so easily as if it resides on your own computer. A unique feature of X drive is that it supports file sharing through passwords.

  3. IBackup (http://www.IBackup.com): IBackup is similar to Xdrive in many aspects but it offers a few additional interesting features. One of them is the snapshot feature which allows you to retrieve files up to ten days old even if you have deleted them. We can schedule incremental backup, differential backup, and full backup. It also works with Apple computers unlike XDrive.

  4. Acpana Data Deposit Box (http://www.datadepositbox.com): Acpana is one of the cheapest options for online file storage for people who don’t want to spend much money in data backup. Acpana also allows incremental real time storage so that data is never lost.

  5. Connected DataProtector (http://www.connected.com): This software has a ‘Heal Wizard’ which helps you restore your system to an earlier point in time if your computer is not working properly. It has a data protector feature which offers storage encryption for secure file backups.

  6. Streamload.com (http://www.streamload.com): Streamload offers you 1 GB of free storage. However, the data is not encrypted and hence it isn’t very secure. Since downloads are restricted to 100 MB per month, it’s not very practical to store huge amounts of data. The service is useful if you want to backup some photos or similar files.

  7. Backup.Com (http://www.backup.com): Backup.com is a commercial backup site that allows data backup at low starting price. This feature is beneficial for people who are interested in casual data backup.

  8. AmeriVault (http://www.AmeriVault.com): AmeriVault is one of the costliest online back service and is meant for large companies. However, the added cost results in email archiving, real time backups and custom designed recovery solutions.

  9. Online-backup (http://www.online-backup.com): Online backup provides a free software to backup your data. It also has various plans and you can select one based on the size of your data.

  10. Copycloud (http://www.copycloud.com): Copycloud is yet another cheaper service. The drawback of this service is that it allows backup from a single computer.

I have recently started working for a company with a great online backup system. They are called Stockade Backup and can be found at Stockadebackup.com. Stockade is an online backup system that uses an automated process to backup according to your schedule. It includes full backup of servers and desktops and even comes with a 30-day risk free trial. It is unique in that it offers a high-tech security system by encrypting with Triple DES, 168 bit encryption. Triple DES has been under intense inspection for over 20 years and NO algorithmic flaws have been found. As if that wasn’t even security, these encrypted files are then transmitted to two different servers located more than 100 miles apart. Another great feature that Stockade offers is an inability for outside parties to hack into your computer. As long as you are using the Direct Connection method, your computer will call Stockade if it is getting hacked into.

A small great outfit similiar to IBackup is Backupbiz.com - they have saved my rear several times and the tech support is awesome. I guess I like being 1 out of a 1000 customers rather than 1 in several hundred thousand customers. Seriously, great scheduled backups. emailed reports, easy to restore, and snapshot retention up to a year (I can pick based on my clients data size)

Online Backup Vault offers a full featured online offsite data backup solution. They my not be the cheapest (however very economical) after checking out the market and being in IT field for almost 15 yrs i have found that you get what you pay for … a $6 a yr service is worth that a free service is worth so much as well…. OnlineBackupvault.com has all advanced features including but not limited to Exchange and SQL server backup, advanced scheduling, daily, weekly, monthly…. as far as OBV company goes - their tech support is very goog- their customer service girl seemed new on the job - but tech support made up for that…

It’s odd to me that you left out Carbonite (www.Carbonite.com) and ibackup in your list of online backup providers. Carbonite is cleary right up there in terms of usability and pricing. They offer everything that Mozy offers, but without the hassle of the annoying tiered pricing structure. iBackup seems more suited to small businesses, but they can’t be ignored either.
